About HEX to HSV conversion
HEX writes a color's red, green and blue channels as six hexadecimal digits behind a hash - the notation used throughout CSS, HTML and design tools.
HSV - also called HSB - splits a color into hue, saturation and value, the coordinates behind the color pickers in most design software. Converting from HEX to HSV gives you a value ready for design tool pickers and image processing.
Both models describe exactly the same set of colors, so nothing is lost in this conversion - it is a change of notation and coordinates, not a change of color space. Values are rounded for readability, which can occasionally move a channel by one step on the way back.
How the conversion works
Every conversion in this tool routes through RGB. Your HEX value is turned into red, green and blue first, and then out again into HSV - so the same tested math serves all 90 directions instead of one formula per pair. HEX is a direct rewriting of RGB; HSL, HSV and HWB are geometric transformations of it; CMYK uses the standard subtractive formula; LAB and LCH go through the CIE XYZ color space using the D65 reference white the web is defined against; and OKLAB and OKLCH use their own matrices over linear-light RGB.
