Swirl Maker

About Swirl Maker

Swirl Maker generates wavy patterns and abstract backgrounds from a flow field: thousands of curves following the same invisible current, so the result looks hand-drawn rather than computed. Three styles share that field. Groovy Swirls paints it as thick ribbons that merge into flat retro shapes, the seventies-poster look. Liquid Marble blends soft overlapping veins into a marbled, fluid surface. Flowing Lines keeps the strokes thin, giving the fine wavy line pattern that works so well on dark hero sections.

Because all three come from the same field, switching styles keeps your composition and simply repaints it. Shape the flow with the lines, scale, curl, turbulence and flow length sliders, then pick colors from fifteen curated palettes or build your own with two to six stops, over any background color or full transparency. Every pattern is seeded, so Reshape explores endless new artwork while the sliders keep doing exactly what they say. For repeating tiled patterns instead, try our Pattern Maker - for layered wave backgrounds, our Wave Maker - or browse the other Create tools.

How it works

  1. Pick a flow style

Start the app and choose groovy swirls, liquid marble or flowing lines - the same field painted three different ways.

  2. Shape and color it

Set how many lines, their scale, curl, turbulence and length, then pick a curated palette or your own colors and a background. Randomize and Reshape explore new looks in one click.

  3. Export and use anywhere

Save as scalable SVG, PNG at any size - with presets for social posts, banners and wallpapers - or a ready-to-paste CSS class. Everything copies straight to the clipboard too.

What can I use the patterns for?

Hero and section backgrounds on websites, posters and album art, slide and video-call backgrounds, social media graphics, phone and desktop wallpapers, packaging and print accents, or as a textured backdrop behind cards and portraits. The SVG export is a real vector, so it stays crisp at any size and every line remains editable in design tools like Figma, Illustrator or Inkscape. Everything you generate is yours to use freely, for personal and commercial projects alike - no attribution required.

Frequently asked questions

Is Swirl Maker free?

Yes, completely free, with no account, watermark or usage limits. The patterns you make are yours to use in your own work, commercial projects included - see our License.

What kinds of patterns can I make?

Three styles from one flow field: groovy swirls (thick ribbons that merge into flat retro shapes), liquid marble (soft blended veins) and flowing lines (thin wavy line art). Each has its own controls on top of the shared field sliders - lines, scale, curl, turbulence, flow length and contrast - and any palette of two to six colors.

How do I add a wavy background to my website?

Choose the CSS format in the save dialog: you get a complete, ready-to-paste class with the pattern embedded as a background image, sized to cover the element. Drop the class on a hero or section element and it fills it. Prefer a file? Export the SVG or a PNG at your exact pixel size instead.

Can I reproduce a pattern I made earlier?

Every pattern is generated from a seed, so the same settings always redraw the same artwork. Reshape simply draws a new seed while your sliders and colors stay put, and Randomize explores a fresh style and settings at once.

Which format should I save in?

SVG keeps the pattern as vector art that scales to any size without quality loss, with every line still editable. PNG gives you an image at exactly the size you choose, with presets for common social and wallpaper sizes; a transparent background is preserved. CSS gives you a ready-to-paste class with the pattern embedded as a data URI. Every format can also be copied straight to the clipboard.

Is anything uploaded to a server?

No. The patterns are generated and exported entirely in your browser; nothing is stored when you close the page.

Which browsers are supported?

All modern browsers: Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, on desktop and mobile.
